TRUTH AND LEGEND

The legend said that the city foundation was done by Bucur, believed to be a shepherd by some, a fisherman, a squire or an outlaw by others; the story was first mentioned in 1761, in document written by Blasius, a Franciscan monk.

Another source, from the 16th century, mentioned Negru Voda as founder of Bucharest the document was written by Luccari (a citizen of Ragusa) after a trip in the country ruled then by Michael the Brave.

The first written document about Bucharest appeared in 1459, when Vlad the Impaler gave a tax exemption to the local squires and offered some land to others.

The city was known in the beginning as the stronghold of Dambovita and had the strategic role to survey the road between Giurgiu and Targsor. Shortly, Bucharest rises from the ranks and was chosen by Radu cel Frumos as princely residence.
